Sports Department

Here at Ratcliffe SPORT MATTERS. Sport can be transformational; it has the ability to change lives and can be a key element of a students’ personal development.

The Senior School, including the Sixth Form, each have a whole afternoon dedicated to sport and have additional fixtures on Saturdays. The Preparatory School also have a full fixture list. These take place during their games afternoon or on a Saturday.

We have recently invested over £1 million into new and improved sporting facilities. Most recently we have added a second all-weather sports pitch, a four lane synthetic running track and additional netball and tennis courts. As part of our 2020 initiative we are also planning to commence work on a new fitness suite in 2018.

Our main sports facilities include:

  • A fully equipped sports hall which has 4 badminton courts; a basketball, netball and volleyball.
  • 1 squash court.
  • 8 outdoor tennis and 7 netball courts. Including floodlit courts
  • High quality rugby, cricket, football and rounder’s pitches.
  • Indoor and outdoor cricket nets.
  • Heated indoor 25m swimming pool.
  • Two all-weather pitches.
  • A synthetic athletics track

We pride ourselves in striving for excellence in Sport; and 2017 has been our most successful year yet.

We have a number of players in netball academies and in the Leicester Tigers development squad.

The U14 Boys XI Hockey and our 1st XII Netball both progressed to the National finals. Pictures

We continue to nurture and support our 1st XI Hockey Captain, Olivia Back as she pursues an elite playing career; and we are very proud as she has been selected to U18 England Women’s Hockey.

“[Sport] helps to create bonds and friendship because playing in team sports you have to learn to trust each other and respect the decisions that are made.”

At Ratcliffe we offer Sport Scholarships and Bursaries; to support those with excellent sporting talent. Many Sports Scholars, both current students, and Old Ratcliffians, have excelled in their chosen sport. Some of whom have gone on play sport at high level, even playing for their country. We hope that by providing Sport Scholarships & Bursaries, we can help more students to go on to compete at the highest level; whilst also being an inspiration and a leader amongst their peers.

As well as our major team sports of rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, athletics, tennis and rounders, other opportunities available include orienteering, volleyball, health related fitness, gymnastics, trampoline, handball, ultimate frisbee, softball, swimming and life-saving, as well as much more. Extra-curricular clubs offer more specialist activities such as; fencing, football, equestrian, cross-country, basketball, squash, golf and Tae Kwon Do.
