Dark skies fail to dampen golfers’ enthusiasm as staff storm to victory in the rain!

The annual staff versus students’ golf match was played under ominous skies and wet conditions for the fourth consecutive year! Despite the damp conditions, nineteen golfers teed off at Park Hill in a keenly contested competition, which was decided on the last match.

The opening match was won by 27 points to 21 by Mr Cook and Mr Michel who triumphed over Carrick Anderson and Declan McAuley. Alex Jarvis and Omar Khan then brought parity to proceedings with a 32 to 24 point victory over Mr Gilchrist and Mr Wildsmith (2013). Mrs Dorn (2014) and Mr Taylor won a close match against Aimee and James, 25 points to 23, while Max Wheeler and Reece Goodman beat Mr Reddin 15 to 10. I would like to point out that Reece’s handicap of 30 will be significantly cut before the next match! So with the overall score in the students’ favour at 91 to 86 after four matches, everyone waited patiently in the clubhouse for the last match to finish. Miss Stafford and Mr Turns (2014) beat Tom Scarborough and Louie Banks 26 points to 12, to help the staff team erase the disappointment of last season’s defeat with a resounding or narrow victory.

Congratulations to Alex Jarvis who won the longest drive competition and, with Omar Khan, also won the prize for the best points total of 16. Mr Gilchrist won the nearest to the pin prize after ‘stiffing’ his tee shot to 6 feet on the 6th hole. Mr Turns won the highest points total for the staff with 20 points. No doubt his handicap will also be reviewed before the next match at Rothley, where the staff team take on parents and students on Wednesday 3rd June.
