Huge congratulations to Isobel Coombs of Year 8 who represented not only Ratcliffe College but the East Midlands at the final of the FutureChef Competition on Monday 24th March at Westminster Kingsway College, London. There were 8,249 contestants in the competition and for Isobel to get down to the last 12 contestants is a truly fantastic achievement. She was the youngest ever contestant to be in the final phase of the competition which was first introduced to schools in 2000.

Isobel’s task was to make a 2 course meal to include a main course and a dessert in the time of two hours. Isobel had to choose what to make from a given list of ingredients, which she was given just two weeks before the final. Isobel was mentored by Darren Creed who willingly advised and guided Isobel to build on her culinary skills and help her devise and practise her dishes for the final.

Isobel made:

Panfried sea bass, pancetta, new potatoes, wilted spinach, tapenade-style sundried tomatoes and a sauce vierge.

Dark chocolate fondant served with homemade raspberry ripple ice cream, raspberry coulis and a pistachio praline.

Isobel received some excellent feedback from the judges, who stated that her main course was perfection and they were truly amazed by her professionalism and maturity throughout the final.

Isobel we are so proud of you, what a truly fantastic achievement. Isobel received her prizes of £100, an embroidered apron, medals, personal chef jackets, a skull cap and signed copies of two books from Brian Turner.
