Ratcliffe at the Palace

On 13th October 2016, five Ratcliffians, Jenna Culpin, Joey Higham, Angharad Lloyd, Eve Marshall and Ololade Mosaku, arrived at St. James’ Palace to receive their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and to meet the Duke of Edinburgh and the actor/singer, Matt Henry, who has recently received an Olivier Award. Matt was funny and interesting and gave sage advice about meeting and conquering any obstacles one meets in life.

Our students were introduced to the Duke, at the same time as about 15 others, and he engaged one or two students in conversation.

Mr Terry Walsh was there to receive a special award for 25 years’ service, but this meant that he was invited to meet the Duke individually and exchange a few words.

The Duke asked about Ratcliffe. Mr Walsh precipitously answered his question, about the number of those doing DofE at Ratcliffe, with the number on the school roll, sc. ‘about 800’. When the lady standing next to Mr Walsh was asked the same question, she said ’Of 1600 or so on the roll, about 150 do the Award’. HRH looked back at Mr Walsh, fixed the lady with a stare and said ‘Well, you’ve got a way to go…!’ Mr Walsh suspects that the Duke is a practised comedian.
