Sports Report – 12th October
Hockey 1st XI
On Tuesday the 1st team travelled to Leicester Grammar School to take part in the U18 County Tournament on Tuesday, where they finished third. The Ratcliffe team were extremely motivated for the tournament and completely dominated their first game against Leicester Grammar with a 4 – 0 win. Goal scorers were Olivia Back, Molly Edwards, Kate Tyszka and Olivia Carpenter. In their next group game, they played a very competitive Uppingham side and again Ratcliffe proved too strong with a comfortable 2 – 0 win, with goals from Flora Colville and Mia Atkinson. This meant Ratcliffe topped the group, which set up a semi-final against Loughborough HS. Ratcliffe again dominated the majority of the game and scored early with a fine solo effort from Olivia Back. Unfortunately, Ratcliffe could not find another goal and Loughborough grab a lucky late equaliser. This meant penalty strokes and sadly Ratcliffe missed out losing by this cruel way of deciding a game. A huge well done to all the girls as they were tremendous on the day and certainly deserved to finish even higher than their 3rd place position. Player of the Tournament was Olivia Back.
On Friday 6th October the U14A team travelled to Leicester Grammar School who hosted the U14 County Hockey Tournament. The girl’s first match was against a very strong side from Uppingham. They took full advantage of our first game nerves and managed to score three goals in quick succession making the final score 3 – 0. In the next game the team faced Leicester Grammar. Annie Bridgewood looked dangerous in attack and had a few chances on the break. However, we didn’t manage to convert our chances leaving the final score 0 – 0.
Against Loughborough High the girls worked their socks off and played some wonderful hockey. Captain Amy Mason made some terrific runs in the midfield and Madi Bryant made some important tackles in defence. Unfortunately, in the last few minutes, Loughborough managed to sneak the ball over the line leaving the final score 1 – 0 to Loughborough. After a change in player positions and a motivational team-talk, the girls had new found confidence. This showed in the next two games against Welland Park which Ratcliffe won 1 – 0 and against Ivanhoe which the girls also won 3 – 1. Going into the last game the girls were apprehensive as it was against tournament favourites Oakham, who were yet to lose a match. The girls really fought hard and played some excellent hockey – this was rewarded with a goal, courtesy of Elise Atkinson meaning that Ratcliffe won the game 1 – 0. Well done to all the girls for their hard work and commitment. Special mention must go to Player of the Tournament Elise Atkinson who was exceptional throughout the day.

The 2nd XV maintained their winning run with a hard fought victory over Hill House. An excellent first half saw Ratcliffe lead 24 – 0 at half time with well worked tries from Sebastian Cook (2) and Joe Collier (2). Ratcliffe lost their discipline in the second half and the opposition came back strongly and scored two tries of their own but, by and large, the Ratcliffe defence held strong to earn a good win. Sam Surridge ran strongly in the loose and Oliver Welch and Alex Purcell both played well but Man of the Match was Joe Collier for his excellent all round game. Final score 24 – 12.
The U15 team returned to winning ways on Tuesday with a 61 – 0 win over De Lisle. The match was more even than the score suggests but stifling defence from Ratcliffe combined with some incisive running proved difficult to stop. Fin Back claimed Man of the Match for a dominant display in his first game of the season.
On Monday, the U13A team played out a very exciting match versus Oundle. Ratcliffe started poorly conceding early tries and looked out of the game at half time. There was an excellent second half fightback where the team showed real character and determination, which saw Ratcliffe score five second half tries and on the attack right to the end of the game only to finish just short losing eight tries to seven. Phelton Tandoh, David Seidu and Joe Atkinson were all try scorers and Men of the Match were Cameron Mulvahill and Wilfred Milner who both had excellent all round games.
On Monday, the U13B team played Oundle in a very entertaining game, running out 60 – 20 winners. Tries flowed for both sides with Harvey Henderson picking up Man of the Match for his leadership and try-scoring.
The under 13C team enjoyed their first game of the season. Indeed, for many of the squad this was their first competitive game of rugby. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience, won and, most pleasingly, played some attractive rugby. Several players scored tries (much to their delight) in an entertaining game which ended 12 – 6 to Ratcliffe.
Congratulations to the following boys who have all been selected in the Leicestershire hockey county squads; Fred Jackson, Tom Binnie, Harry Gamble, Henry Urwin, Harrington Leake.
Congratulations to Tom Binnie (year 11) who is currently playing for Kibworth Mens first team and is the clubs Mens’ Double and U16 Champion. Congratulations to George Binnie (Year 8), who is currently ranked No.7 in Leicestershire Tennis for under 12′s and recently came 3rd in a tournament featuring the top 8 players in the county. He is also the U12 and U14 champion at Kibworth Tennis Club.
