Rugby 1st XV
The 1st XV got their season underway with an emphatic 56 – 3 win over Wolverhampton Grammar School. In what appeared to be a tough opening quarter, the side, led by Charlie Pickering, soon got into their stride and put together some impressive phases of play, executing some well-rehearsed forward and back plays. Man of the Match was awarded to Toby Smith who scored three tries, although it was an impressive performance all-round with many Year 11 boys putting themselves in the frame for the future.

U13

A very good start to the season saw the U13s beat Wolverhampton Grammar 42 – 10. Ratcliffe dominated the game and ended up lending some players to the opposition which significantly strengthened them. Sam Bullock and Aled King were stand out performers in a dominant pack and Captain, Tom Page, controlled the game well from fly-half. Connor Foster ran powerfully out wide scoring three tries (one for the opposition) and Stanley Chell played very well in a number of positions. Man of the Match was Alexander Tyszka for a superb all-round game in both attack and defence.

Cycling

Many congratulations to Tom Chandler who has had a great summer competing, ranging from finishing 1st in a round of the national road series, 3rd in the final stage of The Junior Tour of Wales and just missing out on a bronze medal by 0.7 seconds at the National Track competition!, then finally finishing 2nd in the Scottish National Championships.  Tom has also now been asked to trial for the GB junior academy in Newport, an amazing achievement.

Tom’s 3rd place finish in the Tour of Wales (making the Headmaster especially proud!).

Sam Nightingale,

Boys’ Sports Captain.

Hockey

The senior girls took on a strong Melton Ladies’ hockey team on Saturday in their pre-season friendly. Playing four quarters, the girls got stronger as the match went on and played some nice hockey at times. This will help the squad in the weeks when the games come thick and fast. It was nice to see new Year 12 girls, Emily Sellicks, Caitlin Plummer and Player of the Match, Alina Tebbutt, feature in the starting line-up.

Pre-Season

Well done to all the students who attended pre-season training last week. There were around 250 students and over 20 coaches taking part, which are our best figures so far. The students were put through their paces in some warm conditions, but gave everything to get themselves ready for the new season.

Tennis

Congratulations to Eleanor Shaw who has also had a busy summer competing in many regional tennis tournaments, including the National Finals of the Road to Wimbledon competition, and culminating in the Leicestershire County Championships where she got to three finals and she and her partner successfully defended their 12 and Under doubles title.

Sibella Chew,

Girls’ Sports Captain.

Thank you

May I please say a big thank you in advance to all parents, grandparents, guardians and all other supporters of Ratcliffe College who will come and support the students in their matches this year. Without your help and support they would not be able to achieve the things that they do. The sports staff, coaches and I look forward to seeing you all during the coming year on the side-lines, in all the different weather conditions that I am sure we shall face!

Mr P Gilchrist,

Director of Sport.
