Sports Reports – 13th October 2014
The 1st XV hosted a strong Oakham side for their first mid-week fixture of the season. It was a tough opening quarter with the Ratcliffe boys determined to get their first win of the season. The boys played with intent but a resolute Oakham defence kept our attacking options at bay. A try by Lewis Lancaster mid-way through the first-half was disallowed for a forward pass but the teams intent was clear. After half-time and with the sun now in the eyes of Oakham players, Ratcliffe put together some nice phases of play which resulted in Olly Thornton going over in the corner. Unfortunately, against the run of play, Oakham scored almost immediately afterwards and converted to leave the score at 7 – 5. However, this was a match that the boys refused to lose and after much pressure a penalty was awarded as the last play of the game; up stepped Will Harkness to convert and win the game at 8 – 7.
The U12s produced an outstanding performance mid-week in their game against Loughborough Grammar School, winning 22 – 7 in front of a packed out crowd. Our defence was tested to the limit by Loughborough’s strong, powerful runners, but this was more than matched by our ferocious tackling and defensive structure; limiting their success in getting over the gain line. Our forwards worked incredibly hard to keep possession and put in a momentous effort in the scrum, providing a platform for our backs to attack. We moved the ball well, attacking the wide channels and victory was clinched with a second-half hat-trick by Conner Foster. The whole team are Men of the Match, as every player dug deep and they should be very proud of their effort, application and performance! An excellent victory!!
