1st XI

The 1st XI dominated this game from start to finish against a hardworking and determined Welbeck side. Ratcliffe created numerous chances and quickly took a two-goal lead with two finely worked moves involving key, wide players Jack Watson and Will Hoare. They added a further couple of goals to lead 4-0 at half-time. The second-half took off at the same frantic speed as the first-half with Ratcliffe quickly adding another goal. Players of the Match Will Hoare, Dom Warne and Jack Watson dominated the midfield and created numerous opportunities, from which the home side scored another four goals to run out comfortable  9 – 0 winners. Goal scorers were Tom Roalfe (3), Dom Warne (2), Brad Parker, Ben Pole, Jack Watson and Ben Shaw.

2nd XI

Ratcliffe 2nd XI took control of possession and fought hard to dominate the midfield early on in this 4 – 0 win. Declan McAuley drew first blood when he finished a great spell of passing play low into the bottom corner, followed closely by another in similar fashion. James Head, who had a fantastic game in central-midfield, managed to finish a loose save from the Welbeck keeper. Carrick Anderson, who created many positive attacking opportunities, managed to score from a hard struck short corner. Defensively, Ratcliffe were solid, with Player of the Match, Chris Curnick, handling most of Welbeck’s attacking opportunities with ease.

The U15s faced tougher opposition this week from an organised Nottingham High School team, with the 5-0 win a good reflection on how well the team played. Finn Butler, James Robinson, with 2, Matt Lewis and Joe Jarvis were Ratcliffe’s goal scorers in a fine, all-round team performance. Finn Butler, Harry Antill, Josh Macqueen, James Robinson and Richard Ward had particularly strong games, but Player of the Match went to the whole team for their simple but effective structured play. This performance earns them the ‘team of the week performance’ award.

In a close match, Sam Bird scored an early first goal for the U14s after lots of pressure from the home side, but a determined Nottingham High School dug deep to keep them within reach at half-time. In the second-half the visitors regrouped and applied lots of pressure resulting in an equaliser after several penalty corners. There was very little in the match which was a very evenly fought encounter. With time running out, the Ratcliffe boys pushed hard to score the winning goal and a short corner was signalled as the last play of the game, which gave some hope. Sadly, the shot went just wide and the game ended in a 1 – 1 draw.

The U13s made a good start to the season with a hard fought 3 – 1 victory over Derby Grammar. Despite a slow start to the game, Ratcliffe went ahead with a well taken short corner finished by Alex Purcell. Excellent play in the second-half led to two goals for James Berns. Men of the Match were Matthew Lindley for his excellent all-round play and James Berns for his work in attack.

The U12A team put in a fantastic performance in a 7 – 1 away win at Derby Grammar. The game started very evenly with attacking opportunities created at both ends; however, Ratcliffe’s midfield was too strong with Jo Evenden having a fantastic game scoring a brilliant hat-trick. In defence Billy Hull and George Linnett worked well together breaking down any opposition attacks. Man of the Match was Jo Evenden for a fantastic display in both attack and defence.

The U12B team made a very promising start to their Senior School hockey career with a 7 – 1 win. Ratcliffe had players playing on both sides to enable more players to get their first game under their belts. With some terrific passing moves and clinical finishing, the half-time score was a 4 – 0 lead. The goals were shared around the boys, meaning they all played a big part in the convincing win. Men of the Match go to the whole team for working so well together and showing an excellent attitude when playing for the Derby Grammar team.

William Hoare,
Boys’ Sports Captain.

The U13 girls finished 3rd in a tough and very competitive Foremarke Hall netball tournament on Saturday. Ratcliffe lost their 1st game 10 – 4, to a slick and organised Bromsgrove team. Ratcliffe went on to win their next 3 games, 7 – 2 against Packwood, 7 – 6 against St Anselm’s and 10 – 4 against Ranby, playing some fluent and outstanding netball. In the last game the girls lost to a very good Formarke team who were outstanding throughout the game. Player of the Tournament goes to Nicole Spencer who worked hard and did everything that was asked of her. Well done, girls.
