Sports Reports – 9th June 2014
On Thursday 4th June, 40 students attended the Area Athletics Championships at Meres Athletics Stadium. All the students should be commended for their excellent attitude and behaviour throughout the day. There were some excellent performances and, as a result, a number of students have qualified for the County Athletics Championships which take place at Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium on Saturday 14th June. This was our best set of results and qualifications for over 10 years; all competitors should be extremely proud of themselves.
From the girls, in their respective ages, Georgia Holt came 1st in the 100m, Olivia Back 2nd in the 800m, while the girls 4x100m relay consisting of Georgia Holt, Olivia Back, Hannah Grinham and Emily Grimmett came 1st by over 50m. Emily Grimmett came 1st in the 200m, Mia Atkinson came 1st in the 1200m, beating all other competitors by three-quarters of a lap; a fantastic effort! All these girls have qualified to represent North East Leicestershire at the County Championships. Hannah Grinham came 2nd in the Long Jump, while Kate Tyszka finished 2nd in the High Jump, and both have to wait and see if theirs results are good enough to qualify for the County Athletics. Other girls that did well but just missed out on qualifying for the County Championships were Olivia Carpenter and Isobel Coombs who made it to the 200m Final.
From the boys, in their respective ages, Bruno Gillick came 1st in the Javelin in the U17 age group and Harrison Grimmett who came 1st in the Javelin in the U15 age group. The U13 tennis team lost a close, nail-biting match against Loughborough 4 – 5. All 9 matches showed some pleasing levels of play as many games went to deuce. Sarah Astill and Olivia Carpenter led the way with some excellent net play, while Nicole Spencer, Issy Hose, Mia Atkinson and Sophia Henderson put the Loughborough team under pressure.
The U15 A team won a very close game against Loughborough High School. In the first-innings, Loughborough’s fielding was excellent and we struggled to score, only scoring 1 rounder. We then fielded very well ourselves, conceding only 3 ½ rounders, leaving the game still in the balance going into the second innings. In the second innings, we played much more assertively, taking opportunities to score ½ rounders and forcing mistakes from Loughborough. With Ratcliffe scoring a total score of 8 across the two innings, Loughborough needed 5 to win. The girls kept calm and made excellent fielding decisions to keep them to just 2 ½ rounders, with Ratcliffe taking an excellent win 8 – 6. All players should be commended on an excellent performance with the whole team being awarded Player of the Match.
This was a thrilling game, with many nail-biting moments for the U15 B team. Loughborough batted first and set a good score of 6 rounders in the first-innings. Ratcliffe came to bat second and only managed to score 2 ½ rounders with Loughborough fielding tightly. Loughborough managed to score another 4 rounders, meaning that Ratcliffe needed 8 to win; a tough ask, but Ratcliffe were confident. With some excellent decision-making and daring runs, Ratcliffe were clawing back the deficit. After lots of shouting and excited screaming the final score was tight, but Ratcliffe came out eventual winners. A fantastic all-round performance, where everyone contributed to a fantastic 12 ½ – 10 win and all players deserve to be Player of the Match. Well done.
