U14 Boys Hockey reach Nationals again
Ratcliffe Hockey has enjoyed another fantastic season and this has been highlighted by the success of the U14 boys’ team. They began the year winning all their fixtures convincingly and went into the County Tournament in January unbeaten. They played some outstanding hockey to become County Champions winning all their matches and beating Loughborough Grammar in the final game to earn top spot. The reward for being crowned County Champions was a place at the Regional Finals. The boys remained unbeaten throughout the whole of their domestic season before travelling to Regionals at the end of the Spring Term to play the top nine school teams in the Midlands.
The team performed brilliantly on the day winning all their matches and finishing top of their group before easing through their semi-final to face a strong Repton School team. After a close game in which both teams played some super hockey the match finished 1 – 1, which meant penalty strokes would decide the winner. Ratcliffe held their nerve and came through 3 – 1 winners becoming Regional Champions and Qualifying for the National Finals.
The boys trained hard in the lead up to the National Finals which were held at the Lee Valley National Hockey Stadium, based in the Olympic Park London. The boys performed excellently on the day as one of the best top eight teams in the country eventually finishing joint 5th.
Mr Danny Willcock, Head of Hockey at Ratcliffe College said, “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the boys on what has truly been a magical season. Becoming County and Regional champions is a fantastic achievement, but to reach the National Finals for a second season running is truly remarkable. I am incredibly proud of all the boys for the effort they have shown again this year and I would like to thank Mr Taylor for his work with the team, as well as all support they have been shown by other members of staff and their parents.”
