Ratcliffe students win award at Festival of Chemistry
Four Year 8 students from Ratcliffe College took part in the Festival of Chemistry competition, run by the Salters Group on the 23rd April at Leicester University. The students were Nathalie Dawe, Matthew Ward, Lara Addison and Aarin Popat. The competition was challenging, with 15 other schools and colleges from all over the Leicestershire area taking part. The students were set a challenge by the University to synthesise a new type of indicator, which could be used across the whole of the pH range, from strong acid through to strong alkali. The students were given 8 different chemical compounds from which to make this new indicator. The Ratcliffe students worked as a team, conducting lots of chemical reactions and eventually winning the competition with their indicator. Principal judge, Dr Andrew Hudson, described the work done by the Ratcliffe students as ‘a wonderfully presented project’. This is an excellent achievement by the Year 8 students and they should be congratulated for their efforts.
